Spiritual Formation

Worship and Spiritual Formation go hand in hand. Sometimes we think of Sunday School as the only kind of Spiritual Formation necessary in a church, but we are all on a life-long journey of faith.

I believe it is important and even necessary for people to be involve in Christian Education as children, as youth, as young adults, as middle age adults and into retirement.  God never stops trying to teach us. Why should we stop trying to learn?

Offering Sunday School for children and youth is a must, but it is also important to help our young people feel comfortable in worship, so one Sunday a month we have “Family Sunday” where the children and youth stay upstairs in the congregation and we have an interactive teaching time that helps people to learn and grow regardless of their age.

I offered a “Confirmation and Re-Confirmation Class” for people of all ages and had a number of adults who barely remembered being confirmed as well as those who had never been through confirmation sign up to participate.  The entire group grew tremendously as they revisited the basic theological tenants of our faith.  We had all ages, teens, parents of young children,  those in the active workforce, grandparents, retirees and even a 95 year old life-long educator with a deep and abiding faith.

Since that class we have had a strong core of the congregation dedicated to Adult Education.  We average about 30 attenders on Sunday morning and there are 15 active participants in our Tuesday night Adult Education class!

The dedication and spiritual depth of this group has helped our congregation to grow in faith and faithfulness.
